Welcome Fr. Mitchell!
Let’s all here at Saint Mark Parish please welcome Fr. Mitchell as our new pastor as he begins his ministry here with daily Mass on the 4th of July, 2018 at 9:00 am.
Fr. Joseph P. Mitchell was born in Renton, Washington and raised in St. John’s parish in north Seattle. He is the fourth of six children born to David and Betty Mitchell. At St. John’s he was baptized, celebrated First Communion and was confirmed. After graduation from St. John’s he attended Seattle Prep, graduating in 1967.
After one year at the University of Washington he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served four years as a personnel clerk. While in military service he was aboard a destroyer which deployed to the South China Sea in 1969. He also served on Adak Island in Alaska and the Naval Schools Command on Treasure Island, California. Following his Naval service he enrolled at St. Thomas Seminary College in Kenmore. After receiving his B.A. in Philosophy he attended Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland and after completion he was ordained in St. James Cathedral June 16, 1979.
Fr. Mitchell served as a deacon at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Bremerton. He served as an assistant in three Seattle parishes: St. John’s, Holy Family and St. James Cathedral. In July of 1988 he was assigned as pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Bremerton. In July of 1999 he was assigned to begin a new parish in Vancouver, Washington. His service at Holy Redeemer Parish included the building of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. After 15 years Fr. Mitchell was assigned as pastor of St. Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island. He has served on the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council and other advisory groups.
Fr. Mitchell enjoys maintaining his health by regular lap swimming and other workout activities. He enjoys working on his family’s lake property north of Lynnwood where he tends blueberries and raspberries and can be found on the lake enjoying his stand-up paddle board.
