Opening Letter from Fr. David Mulholland to the Parish of St. Mark dated July 1st, 2012
It is with gratitude to Almighty God and to Archbishop Sartain, that I arrive this coming week to serve as your parish priest at St. Mark! I am excited to have the opportunity to minister at St. Mark and I am looking forward to meeting you all in the months ahead. As you know, I filled in a few times when Fr. Harris was on vacation, and on those occasions, I was so impressed with the warm welcome I received from you, the beautiful liturgies and music I experienced, the dedicated parish staff and volunteers I met, and the wonderful parish and school activities that I learned about. It is a joy to see that St. Mark’s is an active, prayerful, and faithful parish and school community! It is my hope that I will be able to build upon all the good things that are happening at the parish in the coming year. I want to especially thank Fr. Harris for his pastoral leadership these past six years, and for all he has done to assist in welcoming me to St. Mark. Please keep Fr. Harris in your prayers as he takes on a challenging new assignment at St. James in Vancouver.
As Vicar for Clergy, I have spent the past two years visiting many parishes across the Archdiocese each weekend. I have enjoyed visiting my brother priests and getting to know people all over western Washington. However, I have also missed being part of a parish community. So, coming to St. Mark in many ways is an answer to a prayer; to be once again a priest serving in a parish! At the same time, I will not be alone. Fr. Brian List, S.O.L.T., will be assigned as a parochial vicar to assist here at St. Mark, primarily during the week, but on some weekends as well, when I will be tending to my normal duties at the Chancery. So, you might say that you are getting two priests for the price of one! Fr. List will be living with the S.O.L.T. community at St. Alphonsus in Ballard and he will be arriving here in Seattle in mid August. I ask that you join me in welcoming him to the parish as well.
My friends, as a priest, my greatest duty is to love and serve the people that God has entrusted to my care. I pledge to you that I will pray for you and the ministries of the parish and the school each and every day, most especially at Holy Mass. Together, it is my prayer that we all come to know and love the Lord Jesus in a deeper way and be converted to the way of life that He calls us to live! Please keep me and Fr. List in your prayers as well. We need and count on your prayers and support as we serve you each day!
In closing, I would like to share with you my favorite scripture verse, which has and will guide me in all that I do: “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who inspires and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:2. I believe that if the Lord is our focus and is the center of all things, then St. Mark will continue to be a sacred place where the good news of Jesus Christ is proclaimed and witnessed. This is our call as His disciples, and may the Lord inspire us in this mission!
May God bless you and our parish of St. Mark!
In Christ the Lord,
Fr. David Mulholland
